Guardiola: “This is the way forward”

Vanessa Forns

After praising his team for taking their chances so well, Josep Guardiola said it was the players’ attitude we have to thank. “That behaviour, such solidarity, that we all do everything, that’s the way”.

He was especially proud of the finishing against Almeria tonight, a game Barça won by an amazing 8-0. “We scored nearly every time we went forward, unlike other days. It is not easy to describe a game that finished like that. I want to congratulate the team on their effectiveness”.

Solidarity the key

He went on to say that “everything we did is our own merit. That’s the way. We have shown once again that if we do certain things, show solidarity, that we all do everything, we control the game. The talent does the rest.”

Goal-fest against mean defence

2010-11-20_PARTIDO_02.JPGGuardiola was particularly impressed with his players’ serious attitude against a team, Almeria, “that had the third best defensive record in the championship. There’s no doubt that today was the exception … the important thing was stability, we always knew the goals would come”.

Fontàs’ performance

Gerard Piqué watched the game from the sidelines, and Guardiola was asked why that was, which naturally led to comments about his replacement, the inexperienced Andreu Fontà: “I congratulate Andreu on his performance. Gerard had some trouble with his leg. And of there was the risk he’d get booked. But I trust Andreu and took a gamble on him. He had an extraordinary game, congratulations to him.”

Bojan scores again

Finally, he had a few words to say about Bojan. “He never lost his confidence, and neither did we lose faith in him. He was a vital part of the league championship last year. He made the two goals he scored. We know he’s there when we need him.”

Difficult reunion
For Josep Guardiola it was not a nice way to be reunited with his old friend Juanma Lillo at the end of the game. “It was an uncomfortable situation for him and for me. We’ve been friends for years. He’s a fantastic person and an excellent coach.”
