Barca come out top in European stats

Roger Bogunyà

With Europe’s main domestic campaigns all done and dusted, it’s possible to compare Barca’s achievements in La Liga with the other League Champions across the continent - Manchester United, Inter, Girondins, Wolfsburg, AZ Alkmaar and Porto.

Top Scorers

QM3D3160.jpgBarca are way out in front in terms of gaols scored in comparison to the other national champions with an average of 2.76 goals per game, the best in Europe ahead of German Bundesliga winners Wolfsburg averaging 2.35) with Bordeaux the team scoring least on 1,68 goals a game.

Defensively, it’s Porto who boast the best record, having concede a miserly 0.6 goals per game in what is perhaps not as tough a competition as the English and Spanish leagues, who together provided 3 of the 4 Champions League semi finalists.

Best goal difference

WEB_01.jpgBarca’s 70 goal difference was not only a record in the Spanish League, but also left the winners of the other league’s well behind: Manchester United and AZ Alkmaar came closest to matching Guardiola’s team’s figures, both with a 44 goal difference.

Just behind United

WEB_13.jpgUnited managed to win 79% of the points available in the Premier, just ahead of Barca’s 76% in La Liga, in real terms that meant just 3 more points for Sir Alex Ferguson’s team, 90 against 87 and it should be taken into account that Barca were proclaimed Champions four games before the season finished and managed just 2 out of a possible 12 points in those last games. United and Dutch Champions AZ also won the most victories – 74% of their games, with Barca just one win behind them.

Fighting on three fronts
The domestic stats are even more impressive if the pressure on the team winning both the Spanish Cup and the Champions League are taken into account. Wolfsburg or l’AZ Alkmaar for instance, were not even involved in the UCL, whilst Porto were the only other European team to take a domestic league and cup double.
