Iniesta: “One of my best matches”

Anna Segura

Against Sevilla, Andrés Iniesta scored a great goal in the second minute and then went on to set up the other three. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday he admitted it was one of his best performances of the season.

Anyone who saw Wednesday night’s match will tell you that Andrés Iniesta was the star of the show, scoring the opening goal and setting up the rest. Despite the flood of admiring comments, the Spanish international is keeping his feet firmly in the ground: “I don’t feel like I’m from another galaxy. I’m a footballer and when things go well it’s a motivation”.

63 minutes of pure gold

Iniesta played just 63 minutes on Wednesday night but even so he believes it was one of his best matches of the season: “It was one of my best matches especially for the goal and being able to contribute directly to the others”.

Standing ovation

Iniesta was overwhelmed by the show of warmth from the fans: “Spectacular. It’s one of the best feelings a player can have. I try to return the warmth and respect people have for me by doing my best on the pitch”.

Always improving

And he’s not fixing any limits: “I hope I reach my ceiling as a player when I retire. A footballer’s career is a continuous learning process. The best Iniesta is still to come”.

Results and performances

Iniesta also asked people not to underestimate what Barça are doing this season: “You have to give Barça credit for what’s happening. We’re in this situation because we have worked hard and we deserve it”.

“It's in our hands”

Real Madrid are still keeping up the pressure but according to Iniesta “we’re doing our thing and it’s in our hands. There’s less and less to go. The important thing is that we get the results and the most important are the feelings coming from the group which are fantastic. There are some difficult games left but that’s the way we’ll get to the end. We’re not giving up on anything because we’re in a privileged situation”.

Albelda injury shock
Barça’s next league opponent, Valencia, has been rocked by a training ground ankle injury to experienced midfielder David Albelda. Iniesta knows his fellow Spanish international well and told reporters: “He’s an important player for them. We will try and play our game. Valencia are going through a good patch and we’ll have to keep our wits about us”.
