Piqué hands victory to Spain (1-0)

Spain have beaten Turkey 1-0 thanks to a solitary goal from Barça central defender Gerard Piqué in his first competitive game with the national team.


Xavi and Piqué played the 90 minutes in Spain’s 1-0 win over Turkey in the Santiago Bernabeu. Piqué scored in the 59th minute after Xavi centred from a free knick and the Catalan central defender seized on a Sergio Ramos shot to fire home at close range in true goal poacher’s style. The three points consolidate Spain’s position at the top of Group 5.

Gerard Piqué makes Spain debut

What a fantastic start to Gerard Piqué’s international career. The win leaves the men coached by Del Bosque with15 points, ahead of Bosnia (8) and Turkey (7).

Henry 90 minutes in Lithuania win

Barça striker, Thierry Henry, played the whole of France’s game against Lithuania. A goal from Bayern Munich Frank Ribery in the 67th minute settled the result. The three points keep France third in Group 7 with 7 points, 5 points behind first placed Serbia, who beat Romania 2-3.

Vital win for Uruguay against group leader

Uruguay took a vital win in the South American qualifier against Paraguay. Martín Cáceres occupied the centre of the Uruguay defence for the 90 minutes. Uruguay are currently in fourth place in the ten-country group.

No wins for Barça Africans
Neither Samuel Eto'o nor Seidou Keita were on the winning side in their international matches. Togo beat Cameroon 1-0 with Eto’o playing the 90 minutes and receiving a yellow card. Meanwhile, Mali drew 1-1 against Sudan. Keita also played the 90 minutes.
