Txiki: “We are in an ideal situation”

Despite admitting to “the recent unfavourable results”, Txiki Begiristain has pointed out that Barça are still in “an ideal situation.” They are first in the league, on the verge the cup final and got a good result in the first leg of their CL match.

In an interview today on ‘Els millors anys de la nostra vida', a show on Catalunya Ràdio, Barça’s director of football reviewed some of the current issues affecting the club. “It is normal for people to have doubts after three games without a win, but the coaches and the directors are very calm. We are in an ideal situation. We have to remember what we have achieved until now. This team is very capable and we have every faith in them” he said.

Playing system

He praised the team for their ‘intensity’ but had words of warning for the defence: “It is important to strengthen the sense of sacrifice. To regain our solidity at the back, the first thing we have to do is remember everybody’s obligations”.

Up for the cup

Barça’s first chance to get back on track is away to Mallorca in Wednesday’s cup semi final second leg. “Personally, I really want to get to the final. It has been a long time since Barça played in one and in the last two editions we came so close”, said Txiki.

Possible signings

IJ2N0062.jpgAs ever, there are rumours going around about possible new faces at FC Barcelona next summer. Txiki was clear about this. On Henrique, the Barça player on loan to Bayer Leverkusen, he said no decision has been made yet. “Bayer Leverkusen have asked us if they can keep the player for one more season. He’s getting a game and that’s important for him. We’ll see at the end of the season.” Another area of interest is Ribéry (Bayern Munich), on whom Txiki explained “there is nothing to say”, although he did describe the Frenchman as “a top quality player”.

Naming names
“He is on great form. He has shown us a lot of things and always plays to the maximum. But defenders are getting better and better at stopping him. There are games when there are up to four men on him and that goes to show just how much he can tip the balance.”

“The team generates lots of chance and they land at the feet of Samuel. He has scored in all competitions and just gets better and better. His statistics are amazing and our intention is for him to stay here for a very long time.”

”It is unfair that people only notice the goals he lets in and not the ones he stops. Since he joined the first team in 2003, it has been very clear to us that he should be FC Barcelona’s first choice keeper. We have no intention of signing another goalkeeper.”
