They meet again as coaches

Edgar Fornós

FC Barcelona’s Josep Guardiola and Atlético Madrid’s Abel Resino are about to face each other for the first time as managers.

Guardiola and Abel will meet as Barça and Atlético resume their rivalry on Sunday evening at the Calderón. The home manager, who was previously in charge at Murcia, Levante and Castellón, arrived at Atlético Madrid after Javier Aguirre was sacked. Abel Resino played in the mattress-makers’ goal for ten seasons, while Guardiola wore the Barça shirt as a player for eleven. But the duo only faced each other on the pitch on four occasions.

No defeats

PEP_GUARDIOLA002.jpgIn none of the encounters between Guardiola and Abel did FC Barcelona lose. They won in 91/92, 92/93 and 93/94, and drew 1-1 in 92/93 at the Camp Nou. At the Vicente Calderón, Guardiola was involved in a convincing 4-1 win as a player.

Guardiola and Atlético Madrid

Statistics are in Josep Guardiola’s when it comes to trips to Atlético Madrid. In eleven meetings, Guardiola won in seven, with three draws and just one defeat. That was in the 93/94 season when FC Barcelona famously lost 4-3 after taking an early three goal lead.

Floods of goals
Barça v Atlético Madrid and Atlético Madrid v Barça matches in the 1990s were famed for the number of goals they produced. In eleven games, no fewer than 54 goals were scored, almost five a game!
