Rijkaard: “I expect a different Lyon”

Sandra Sarmiento / Jordi Clos

Barça are not expecting an easy ride against Tuesday’s Champions League opposition Olympique Lyon despite the 3-0 win at the Camp Nou. Rijkaard feels a Barça win would be an important gesture to the fans.

Frank Rijkaard spoke to the press on Monday in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Champions League clash with Lyon. He kept his speeches short, with such comments as “I expect a very different rival to the one we met at the Camp Nou because they are playing at home and have got their form back. I think we will have to prepare very well for this one”. He preferred not to discuss his team selection and said Bojan “had a chance” of playing and Ronaldinho “is fine”, despite his lack of training with the squad.

Away wins

Barça have not been overly impressive on the road this season, and for Rijkaard “the solution is to win, that’s what we’re after. It will be hard against such a good team but we are very keen…winning here would be a great contribution from the team”.

Watching the restructuring

He was also asked to comment on the restructuring going on among the Board of Directors, to which he said that president Joan Laporta has filled him on the details and explained how these moves should improve affairs at the club. “It is a good thing, the Board has been strengthened” said the Barça manager. He was also asked how things have developed following Edmilson’s controversial declarations, and limited his response to stating that things are much better now than they were before.

Dressed for the cold
Barça have already discovered that there will be cold weather awaiting in Gerland. Many of the players wore gloves in the 6º temperatures at the afternoon training session. Several board members and technical secretary Txiki Begiristain also attended the session.
