Rijkaard keen to use plenty of players

Roger Bogunyà

Speaking before the friendly with Dundee United, Frank Rijkaard explained that he intends to “use as many players as possible” in Thursday’s match.

Although “some of the reserve team players have not had very much rest” as they were still competing long after the first team had broken up, Frank Rijkaard says they will also be contributing to the side against Dundee United. “But we need to consider the fitness of each footballer” he warned.

Opposition better prepared

qm3d0365.jpgFC Barcelona have not played together since ending the 2006-07 season against Mamelodi Sundowns on June 20. Dundee United, meanwhile, have been back at work for three weeks, and the Dutchman is aware that the Scots will “be better prepared”.

But he doesn’t see why that should be a problem, saying “it is normal for our players to still be a bit out of form.” He added that although it was only a friendly, he expected a “good game”.

Hooray Henry

Rijkaard is very pleased with what he has seen so far of Thierry Henry. “He is a great striker and we are so happy to have him here at Barça” he said.”

Deco doing well

Rijkaard is also pleased with the way Deco is performing at the club, and that the feeling is mutual, so it seems unlikely that the Portuguese international will be leaving, even though the media has been speculating a transfer for several days.

Dundee United relish occasion

Scottish sun
Asked why he had picked Scotland to start his pre-season plans, Frank Rijkaard said “it was something the club decided after studying several offers. People have visited the different places on offer and they noted that the facilities are very good here and were full of praise for Saint Andrews.” He was also very impressed with the state of the pitch and the temperature as “we don’t have to get up too early to avoid the sun”, which means the team can train at any time of day.
