Messi: Champions League top scorer

Roger Bogunyà

Leo Messi not only gave an excellent performance against Celtic but his two goals catapulted him to the top of the ranking of goal scorers in this season’s Champions League with six goals.

Messi started the campaign with four goals in five matches in the group stage: against Lyon in the opening game, Stuttgart in the second matchday, against Rangers in the Camp Nou and another against Lyon.

A goal per match

Messi is now the highest scorer in this season’s competition ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United), Ibrahimovic (Inter) and Gerrard (Liverpool), who have five.

Eight goals in three years

In the 2005-0606 season, when he broke through into the first team, he scored his first CL goal against Panathinaikos (5-0). The following year he scored away to Bremen (1-1). But this year, he has really exploded onto the European scene with six goals in six matches. That’s now eight goals in eighteen matches.

The first goals of 2008
The two goals against Celtic are Messi’s first in 2008. He picked up an injury in December against Valencia and has missed many matches since then. His last goal dated back to 27th November when he scored from the penalty spot against Lyon, also in the Champions League.
