Messi proves to be decisive

Lionel Messi completed a memorable year when he scored the winning goal in the FIFA Club World Cup and gave Barça their sixth major trophy as he and the club made history in Abu Dhabi.

Unprecedented haul

The Argentinian has had an almost perfect 12 months with the Blaugrana that was capped by his chested goal against Estudiantes to ensure that the Catalan outfit can enjoy an unprecedented haul of silverware in 2009.

When in Rome

Messi had already been decisive in one final this term as he rose to head home in the final of the Champions League in Rome against Manchestyer United. It more than made up for the forward's unavailability in Paris three years earlier when he could not play against Arsenal.

Super Cups

In the Spanish Super Cup tie in August Messi was instrumental by scoring two goals to help Pep Guardiola's team to an emphatic win in Camp Nou. A week later did not score, but did set up the winning goal from Pedro that saw FC Barcelona beat Shakhtar Donetsk in Monaco to lift the European Super Cup.
