Spanish League Round-Up Week 30

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Real Madrid’s 0-2 win in Santander means they are just one goal better off that Barca in goal difference at the top of La Liga ahead of next weekend’s big game at the Bernabeu.

Valencia and Seville both improved their options of Champions League football with wins at the weekend.

Ronaldo, Higuain and Villa all on target

Leo Messi on 26, still leads the Spanish League goal scorers table with Higuain on 24, David Villa on 20 and Cristiano Ronaldo on 18. Ronaldo and Higuain gave Madrid the points against Racing to keep Pellegrini’s team top for another week and also send Racing deeper into trouble at the bottom. The Santander side are now fourth from bottom, still six points clear of the drop, but with just one win in the last nine games and trips to the three bottom clubs before the end of the season to come.

Valencia duly brushed aside Osasuna 3-0 at the Mestalla with goals from Jaoquim and two more in the last minute from David Villa to put 8 points between themselves and fifth place Seville, whose 3-0 win over Tenerife put them level with Mallorca on points. The Islanders grabbed a point in Almeria with a late, late Webo goal, whilst Kanoute Luis Fabiano and Juan Carlos scored for Seville to give new boss Antonio Alvarez his first win. With the exception of Barca’s visit in May, Seville look to have an easier run in than Mallorca, who have to play Valencia, Real Madrid and Bilbao, whilst Valencia themselves play Mallorca, Bilbao and Madrid in the next three games.

Valladolid booed off

Tenerife’s defeat could have been worse for them, but second from bottom Valladolid also went down, booed off the pitch after Villarreal beat them 0-2. Meanwhile, Jerez continue to charge up behind them, taking a point from their visit to Gijon in a 2-2 draw with Sporting to keep their unlikely dream of staying up alive. Jerez are now just a point below Valladolid and a further point behind Tenerife, with Racing and Malaga a not too distant six more in front of them. Zaragoza lifted themselves out of immediate danger by beating Malaga 2-0 on Saturday night and now sit in 15th spot, a point ahead of Malaga and Racing.

Fight continues for UEFA spots

Villarreal’s win keeps them in contention for a UEFA spot, whilst Atletico Madrid deepened Deportivo’s gloom after a 3-0 thrashing with Jaunito, Forlan and Tiago on target. With Bilbao currently sixth on 43 points, Villarreal are seventh on 43 points, Deportivo are eighth a point behind, Getafe, who drew 1-1 with Espanyol, are a further point adrift and Atletico Madrid are tenth on 40 points.
