Gio: “El clásico is always a complicated game”

Vanessa Forns

Gio van Bronkhorst believes that despite FC Barcelona’s current form and all the predictions that they are going to win the game against Real Madrid on Saturday, that “like all clásicos, it will be very complicated”.

The Dutch defender spent four seasons at Camp Nou after joining the club 2003-04 and has a great deal of experience of playing in games against Los Merengues. “Many people believe that Barça will win easily,” he said. “But I can guarantee you that this is always a difficult match.”

Different form

Showing that he still follows the Spanish game, he said that Barça are “the leaders because they are very strong and play at a very high level” while Madrid “go to Camp Nou having lost some important game and having changed their coach”.

Camp Nou atmosphere

FCB-Betis.jpgVan Bronkhorst has no problem remembering his favourite game against Real Madrid in Camp Nou as he recalled the encounter in the 2004-05 season which the Blaugrana won 3-0. “I have great memories of that day,” he continued. “We really overwhelmed Madrid and won by three goals and I scored the second. The atmosphere that night in the stadium was incredible.”

Barça to win

Despite having left two yeas ago, Van Bronkhorst is still very much a Barça fan and hopes that the home team “play a very good game and give the fans something to cheer about by taking all three points”.

Watching the game on tape
Gio van Bronkhorst will have to record the Barça and Real Madrid game because at 20:45 on Saturday evening he will be playing for Feyenoord in their game against current Dutch league leaders AZ Alkmaar. “It is a shame that I will not be able to see it live, but I will watch all of it afterwards,” he said.
