The online sports columns around Europe have praised Barça’s performance against Bayern Munich speaking of “marvellous football”. Messi comes in for special attention.

German criticism for Bayern

The main German newspapers are especially hard on Bayern Munich.

‘Bild' headlines its report “Night of shame in Barcelona” and asks the question “Klinsi (Klinsmann) out?”. They go on to explain: “Super Messi devoured the white sausages of Bavaria”

Sports paper Kicker has much the same approach: “Bayern taken apart, overwhelmed, unmasked and desperate”. Both sources quote Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer at the end of the match: “A catastrophe”.

L'Équipe

Masters of their art, Guardiola's team were winning 2-0 in the 12th minute and finished off the match before halftime. Exceptional”.

La Gazzeta dello Sport

The Gazzetta dello Sport goes with the headline “Messi and a sublime Barça destroy Bayern”. The Italian sports paper makes special mention of the first half, describing it as “marvellous”.

Messi riding high in UK

The Bayern website
In their Barça v Bayern match report, the official Bayern website describes Barça as “far superior” and insists that it will take “a miracle to reach the semi-finals”. However, they go further and heap superlatives on Pep Guardiola’s players: “Straight away they started to show in a spectacular way why they are considered the best team in Europe”.
