Piqué: “it could have been six or seven”

www.fcbarcelona.cat

For Gerard Piqué, tonight’s scoreline could have been much bigger “2-0 was less than we deserved”. Still it was a good night all round for Barca and Pique insisted: “we picked up points and Madrid drew.

The young central defender was disappointed with Puyol’s injury and the fact that the captain will be joining Abidal on the injury list: “we are fewer defenders without them in the team, but the team has shown what we’re capable of doing and we’ll just have to work hard for the three weeks the captain’s out”.

All the players who spoke after the game stressed the importance of the win for the League challenge as well as for the Champions League and Cup competitions.

Eto’o

“A goal will come for me. Today just wasn’t my day”.

“It’s good to be back to winning ways and what’s more creating loads of chances. Let’s hope we can keep that going”.

Gerard Piqué

“Putting another two points between us and Madrid and leaving the distance at six points is very important, though we never panicked about that”

“I’m the tallest in the team, but they had Llorente who’s even taller”.

“With Abidal and Puyol injured, we are fewer defenders without them in the team, but the team has shown what we’re capable of doing and we’ll just have to work hard for the three weeks the captain’s out”.

Leo Messi

“I just concentrate on going out and playing and helping my teammates. I was glad to get the result and score the second goal myself – it was a penalty and I was lucky enough to put it away”

“After these last few games, tonight was very important to us. We knew Madrid weren’t winning, but really the most important thing is how we play and I think we have recovered some of the confidence we had at the start of the season”

“Eto’o was relaxed after the game; let’s hope he gets a goal on Wednesday”.

Sergi Busquets

“The truth is that the team played like we playing three or four weeks ago and that’s very important”.

“Today it was my turn to score, other games it’ll be other teammates. The main thing is that we showed again we could break down a tight defence”.

“It’s a pity the third goal wouldn’t go in, but we made lots of chances and it was good all round performance”.

“It’s great to score a goal from midfield and especially since it was my first league goal”.

“Wednesday’s game is a simple knock out game – there are no second chances. We’ll be studying Lyon before the match and if we put in the work we’ve got a good chance”.

Iniesta

“I’m particularly happy about the way the team played and created so many chances and of course, we won - that’s important. There’s always going to be a blip during a league season, but we’ve come back and put more distance between us and the second place team”.

“Yes, it’s important to keep taking points, but we don’t need to look over our shoulders at how Madrid are doing, just concentrate on ourselves – it’s in our own hands”.

“We’re putting in a great season, right from the start. I’m playing well and I feel fit and in form”.

“We are all mentally prepared to be challenging in all three competitions come this May and I think we are on the right track”.

Laporta: “It was important to win and we did”
FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta told reporters after the game: “it was important to win and we did”, while underlining the importance of Guardiola’s positive comments and show of confidence in the players before the match.

Laporta was also well satisfied with the attendance at the game: there were a lot of fans here tonight - 75.074. It’s important that these fans also turn up on Wednesday to help us overcome Lyon”.
