Eto'o pays tribute to Mandela

Samuel Eto'o is in South Africa to honour Nelson Mandela’s 89th birthday in a game to be played in the Newland Stadium in Cape Town.


'90 minutes for Mandela' is what they are calling the game in hour of former political leader Nelson Mandela’s 89th birthday on July 18. Striker Samuel Eto'o will be playing in representation of FC Barcelona.

Captain of Africa XI

The Barça player, after meeting Mandela in person on Tuesday, will be skippering the African select eleven against a World XI made up by players and former players, and led by the great Pelé.

The shirts

mandela_i_etoo2.jpgIn the presentation of the match, Pelé and Eto'o presented Mandela with the two shirts the teams will be wearing at the match. They are all numbered 89 in honour of Mandela, who was imprisoned at Robben Island for more than 30 years.

But as well as African captain Eto’o, there will be another familiar Barça face in Andoni Zubizarreta who will be keeping goal for the World XI. 67 year old Pele will be joined other former greats like Ruud Gullit, Julen Guerrero and Emilio Butragueño, while the African side includes George Weah and Lucas Radebe.
