Eto'o and Deco will miss the ‘classic’

Anna Segura

Samuel Eto'o and Deco can’t play against Real Madrid next Wednesday as they will both be suspended after each picking up his fifth yellow card in the game against Valencia.

fcb-stuttgart-ETOxO.jpgThe game this Sunday was marred by two pieces of bad news: the yellow cards for Deco and Eto’o. The Portuguese midfielder was cautioned in the 25th minute for a foul on Marchena, while Eto’o was booked in the 47th minute for a tackle on Silva. With these two yellows, both players are now on a total of five, and so face a one-match ban, which just happens to be Madrid-Barça.

Two more absentees

Deco and Eto’o now join Iniesta and Milito, both suffering from knee injuries, on the missing list for the Madrid game.

The Ivory Coast international didn’t play today because of ankle ligament trouble and, according to the medical staff, he will have the necessary treatment and should be just about ready for the ‘classic’.

Eleven seasons later, another 6-0

Today’s 6-0 is the biggest win this season. You have to go back to 1996-97 to find another 6-0 in the league. On that occasion it was Rayo Vallecano who let in six against the azulgranas.

Poor run ends against Valencia

Today’s win also brings an end to a run of six seasons without beating Valencia in domestic competition. The last time was in 2000-01 when Rivaldo’s overhead kick gave Barça a 3-2 win.

Van Bronckhosrt in the stand
Giovani van Bronkhorst was present at the game, watching from the stand. The Dutch defender, currently with Feyenoord (where he won the cup), received a plaque at the end of the game in recognition of his achievements with Barça, having won two league titles and the Champions League.

Another ex-azulgrana who should be happy today is Gio’s compatriot, Mark van Bommel, who won the Bundesliga with a 0-0 draw away to Wolsburg. That makes it a double for the Dutch international, who also won the cup with Bayern Munich.
