Ezquerro: “5-2 does not guarantee we will be in the final”

Jordi Clos

The FC Barcelona striker believes caution is required going into the second leg of the cup semi final with Getafe. “All teams want to make it to the final” he said.

The league title race is heading for the final straight, but the squad is going to put that out of their minds as they face Getafe in the cup semi finals. Santi Ezquerro said today that “perhaps people don’t value this competition all that highly, but all teams want to be in the final”. And the 5-2 lead Barça have going into the second leg does not imply it is a done deal.

Dear prudence

“5-2 does not guarantee we will be in the final”, said Ezquerro. “We have the chance to get there, and we have a good lead, but that does not mean we are sure to go through unless we give it one hundred per cent”

Keen to play

WEB_07.jpgThe striker continued by saying “I hope and want to get more chances to play”. But asked whether the lack of first team opportunities he is getting may prompt a move this summer, he replied that “the main thing now is for us to work together for the same goal. We should not speak of transfers or signings because that is of no benefit to the club”. Ezquerro has one year left on his contract, and intends to end the season on a good note.

Sure of league title

After the win at Anoeta, Santi Ezquerro is certain that “if we can maintain our level, I am sure we can win the league even before the last day. We are in a good position, and are not depending on other results going our way”. But speaking of Barça’s rivals, he added “they will have to put pressure on us however they can. They do so be trying to appear confident and positive. An exciting end to the league would be good for football”.

Second cup final possibility
Santi Ezquerro is one of the few players in the current Barça squad to have experienced a Copa de Rey final before. That was in 1998, when he was at Mallorca, and the islanders lost to Barça. “It is really nice to play in a game like that”, he said. Nine years later, he has a chance to do it all again.
