Edmílson: “We will win the League and Cup”

Jesús Carrillo

After getting the medical all-clear, José Edmílson has said he is confident that FC Barcelona will win both the league and the cup this season.

After returning to training after fifteen days on the sidelines through injury, Edmílson has said “we are on good track in the league” although he is aware that “Real Madrid are doing very well”.

Living the moment

The championship race is anything but over, but the former World Cup winner claims they have “a winning squad. We have been on top for three years, and we will win the titles still in play, and we will do that for ourselves, for the club, for the fans and we will celebrate both titles with all of the club members”.
Asked what he thought of FC Barcelona’s recent performances, Edmílson said “the most important thing is to win our home matches. And right now we are the only team whose destiny is in our own hands”.

Pivotal role at the back

Having Edmílson back will certainly improve Rijkaard’s tactical options, but the Brazilian knows that ultimately "the coaches will decide, but I would love to play and contribute my experience. I have fully recovered and I’m ready to play and now it’s just a matter of what the boss decides”.

Relaxed

In Madrid there is renewed optimism about their own title chances, but Edmílson merely reiterated that “the group is much more united, we are more relaxed and there is a great atmosphere among the players. They [Real Madrid] are excited about winning, and they also have a squad with a winning mentality, but I like to keep my thoughts at home and try not to take too much notice of everybody else. And neither do I take too much notice of what they are saying about my home from outside”.

Seeing Liverpool qualify for the Champions League Final has also set José Edmílson thinking about different approaches to the game. “At Anfield they don’t have the best players in the world, but they have a strong team. They are very effective, almost perfect tactically, and obedient. Football is changing, it is not so much about fancy skills, it’s about playing as a team. Liverpool are showing that”.
