The European Cup travels to Athens

As tradition dictates since 1997, the European Champion will give back the trophy prior to the quarter final draw so that it may be put on display in the city hosting the final. Joan Laporta, Txiki Begiristain and Giuly will attend the ceremony.

At midday on Friday, FC Barcelona will give back the European Champions Cup won in Paris last year to UEFA president Michel Platini. The main protagonist will be Ludovic Giuly - absent from the classic due to suspension – who will present to trophy and talk to his countryman Platini. The UEFA president will then hand the Cup to the mayor of Athens Nikitas Kaklamanis.

The Greek capital will put the trophy on public display until the final takes place at the Olympic Stadium on the 23rd of May.

Laporta will be present

The Barcelona delegation will be led by president Joan Laporta who travels to Greece along with Giuly, technical secretary Txiki Begiristain and director Albert Perrín. Following the presentation of the trophy, the draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League will be held. Once the ceremony at the Megaron International conference centre has finished the Barcelona delegation will head back to Barcelona.

Memorable moments
Before Giuly hands the trophy back to Platini the audience will be shown some very special moments for Barcelona. They will see clips from the final in Paris and some of the celebrations that followed - both on the field and of the streets of Barcelona.
The club also filmed the moment the trophy was removed from Barça’s trophy cabinet before being brought to Athens and so the audience will be shown the entire journey of the Cup since it left Stade de France on the 17th of May 2006.
