Gudjohnsen. “It is a great moment to play Madrid”

Eidur Gudjohnsen wants to put the Champions League behind them and face up to the challenge of winning the League and Copa de Rey. The first test comes this Saturday against Real Madrid at the Camp Nou.

The FC Barcelona players want to face up to the future, even though it no longer involves the Champions League, and show on Saturday that they still have what it takes to win the first division championship.

Eidur Gudjohnsen believes “it is a good moment to play against Madrid and to give the fans a bit of happiness. There is no time for feeling disappointed because there is a big game coming up and we need it to get our confidence back.”

Back to work

The Icelander was not hiding his dismay at seeing the Champions League campaign come to an abrupt end but said “we have to keep working because there are still two important trophies to be won. After a season like the last (winning the league and Champions league) it is very difficult to match that kind of level. All teams face difficult times, but we have the quality to get better and to carry on with our work”.

Hard to win at Anfield

Tuesday saw the Icelander return to Anfield for the first time since leaving Chelsea and he said “it is very hard to win there and score two goals. They are a tough side with strong defenders and they don’t leave a lot of room. But the team worked well, and showed heart and pride”.

Gudjohnsen commented that in games like the one in Liverpool “the team, which already has the quality, needs to put in a little bit more work and sacrifice in order to win games like this”.

Morale boosting goal
Gudjohnsen scored the Barça winner at Anfield, although it was not enough to see his team through to the last eight of the competition. But it did his confidence a lot of good, and his third goal makes him the team’s top scorer in European competitions this season. “It is good for my confidence because I haven’t scored for a while” he said. “But it is a shame that my goal in Liverpool didn’t do us any good in the end”.
