JES Morocco (Tangier)

  • Location and context
Tangier, which is Morocco's gate to the western world, has become a central attraction for the Moroccan rural population; a circumstance which has caused the city to reach one million inhabitants, and therefore to become the fourth largest city in Morocco.

This growth of the city has caused the appearance or 'ruralised' neighbourhoods, located mainly at the Urban Commune of Beni Makada, where the population density has caused the lack of salubriousness, lack of social services, street violence and lack of public areas for youths' leisure.
  • Beneficiaries
The main beneficiaries were the instructors and teachers from public schools, who attended courses which had the aim to train the participants on the organisation of non-curricula educational and sporting activities. The beneficiaries were also 150 children from Beni Makada, one of the most depressed neighbourhoods of Tangier, who were the first to benefit from the new training of teachers and instructors.
  • Activities and results
Training sessions for instructors were held in the mornings in order to prepare them for the organisation of groups of children and youths in non-curricula educational-formative and sporting activities. In the afternoons other activities were organised with the direct participation of boys and girls, in which the instructors had the opportunity to put into practice the most theoretical concepts learned in the morning sessions under the supervision of Alberto. Throughout the sessions, special emphasis was put on the promotion of the values of sport and citizenship, and the equality of gender.
