JES Honduras (San Pedro Sula)

  • Location and context
San Pedro Sula is the second most inhabited city of Honduras, and as happens in many industrial cities it has important areas of poverty.  The juvenile delinquency groups, called “maras”, are very common in Central America and are one of the main threats for the youths within the area.

The activities were carried out at the city's 'Complejo Olímpico Metropolitano' (Metropolitan Olympic Complex).
  • Beneficiaries
The 40 instructors who participated in these workshops belong to the city schools; the same as the 160 youths registered between 7 and 20 years of age who come from marginal areas of San Pedro Sula.

The Workshops on Solidarity and Sport have the aim of becoming a multiplying factor. Taking into consideration that each instructor takes care of approximately 30 children, with this teachers' training programme the Foundation will be able to reach indirectly more than 1,200 youths from Honduras during 2008.
  • Activities and results
Theory sessions for educators and practical sessions with the youths were conducted in which teachers applied their new skills with the collaboration of Julio Alberto Moreno. Several round tables were carried out where subjects such as values and ethics in sport were dealt with, as well as peace, coexistence and preventive health.

The Honduras Workshop on Solidarity and Sport provided the instructors of San Pedro Sula with resources to expand their knowledge in the application of sport as an educational tool. The Workshop on Solidarity and Sport also contributed to improve the levels of social insertion within society of the youths of this area as well as to promote among them civil and personal hygiene values.
  • Collaborating entities
    INMUDE (Sport Municipal Institute)
    Municipality of San Pedro Sula
Peace and coexistence office of San Pedro Sula
