A Super Cup treble

www.fcbarcelona.cat

FC Barcelona has won the Spanish Super Cup in three sporting disciplines for the first time in the Club’s history this season: football, handball and basketball.

In the middle of August, the football squad beat Athletic Club Bilbao to lift the football Super Cup ( 1-2 ; 3-0 ). At the beginning of September, it was the turn of the handball section to win their 14th Spanish Super Cup after they beat Ciudad Real ( 26-33 ). And this past weekend, Regal Barça won the basketball Super Cup for the first time in five years.

A Club record

2009-08-23_PARTIDO_21.jpgThis is the first time in the Club’s 110 year history that three Spanish Super Cups have been won in the same season. On two previous occasions, Barça won two trophies; in 2005/06 (football and roller hockey) and 2008/09 (handball and roller hockey).

A recent innovation

img_25gx1x.JPGThe Spanish Super Cup is a relatively recent innovation – it started in the 80’s – that brings together the winners of the Spanish league and the Spanish Cup. Despite the relatively short time the tournament has existed, every section of the Club has won it at least once except for the Futsal squad. The football section has won it eight times, the first in 1983/84. The handball section has the most trophies (14) while the roller hockey section has 4.

Three for basketball

Since then they’ve won it twice again but in a four-team knockout format featuring the winners of the league, and Cup, the host team and the team that performed best in Europe in the previous season.

A successful weekend

2009-10-03_PARTIDO_12.JPGRegal Barça’s victory against Real Madrid ( 86-82 ) put the icing on the cake for the Club at the weekend. The football team beat Almería 1-0 which, combined with Sevilla’s 2-1 win over Real Madrid, sent Barça to the top of the table.

Finally, the football reserves (Barça Atlètic) also ran out clear 3-0 winners against Sabadell, the first win in the Miniestadi this season.

No Super Cup for roller hockey
In fact it could so easily have been four Super Cups if Barça Sorli Discau had clinched the roller hockey competition in the middle of September. However, Roncato Patí Vic had other ideas.
