"The Derby match will be very interesting"

This Saturday will see the seventh derby match for Frank Rijkaard. The blaugrana coach already knows what these games are about and has no doubts in saying "it will be very interesting".

Barça will be looking for victory in the local derby following two consecutive draws in the league. Frank Rijkkard is sure that a victory in a game of this intensity will help the team: "yes, it will be necessary as we always strive to achieve victory, but I have to say that before games I don't speak of victory, but of honour and of representing the colours of the club well; leaving a good image. If this is achieved, then the likelihood of victory is greater. However, I always speak of respecting the opposition".

Rijkaard has not wanted to highlight certain players from Espanyol: "I believe the merit is always with the team. Espanyol have had a pretty good season so far, but thanks to the work of the team and their mentality on pitch. After analyzing the team, we see De la Peña who could pose the biggest threat; however, we have to be aware of the whole team".

Deco's absence

One of the players who will miss the game is Deco. The '20' is back in full training this Friday, although the coach has thought it best not to risk him: "He won't be playing this Saturday, he's back in training and we've run him through a few tests, but we think it's best he stays and so he's 100percent for the next game".

Saviola

Two goals in midweek have demonstrated that Saviola is still match sharp. Rijkaard wanted to make clear that since the Argentine decided to stay with Barça, he has relied on him the same as any other player in the squad. "We have three strikers, Eto'o, Gudjohnsen and Saviola, and I've never told him that I'll never play him; he deserves what he deserves." Regarding the renewal of his contract, Rijkaard said: "If Txiki asks me what I think of Saviola, I can say that I'm happy with his work, it's a shame about the injuries, however, up until now he's been good, he has a good attitude and he possesses a lot of quality".

Rumours

During the press conference, Frank Rijkaard was questioned regarding the rumour going around that Barça are interested in Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo. "He's a great player", however, "it's a rumour because I've never spoken of him. In relation to Barça, the club is always looking for new talent as we are always looking to make improvements. There's still half a season to play for and I don't know what could happen, but for the moment, it's not something I'm thinking about".

Effective attack

Lately, Barça have not been scoring goals with quite the same ease to which they have become used to. This does not worry Rijkaard: "It's more important to be able to create opportunities, the circumstances such as the Christmas break and only a few training sessions are sure to affect the rhythm of the team. Yes, we have to improve, but I'm sure we will". He also pointed out that the team possesses a unique ability "to score many goals from set pieces, which is a valuable asset to have".

Praise for the hard work
Frank Rijkaard has always defended his idea of valuing the work and commitment of the group. Therefore, when questioned regarding the absences of some of the team's big names, he replied: "If you're down 5 players, it will be noticed. But the players who took part, dealt with the circumstances well; especially against oppositions known to be difficult. Ronaldinho, Deco, Eto'o and Messi are four of the best players in the world and it's clear they can make a difference. However, we're a group, from Ronaldinho and Deco to Jorquera and Ezquerro, we don't want to forget anyone because everyone plays their part in the group and how we function together".
