Candido Cannavò dies

The ex-director of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Candido Cannavò, has died this Sunday morning at the age of 78. The Italian journalist, who was awarded the Vázquez Montalbán Prize two weeks ago, had suffered a brain haemorrhage last Thursday.

Cannavò directed La Gazzeta dello Sport from 1983 to 2002. In recognition of his widely successful journalistic career, he was awarded the Vázquez Montalbán Sports Journalism Prize two weeks ago by the FC Barcelona Foundation and The College of Catalan Journalists.

An Italian institution

All Italian sport will hold a minutes silence today in memory of Candido Cannavò, who was an institution in his country.
Since he suffered a brain haemorrhage last Thursday, La Gazzeta dello Sport has received thousands of tributes for this much-loved figure.
