Barça lose out against Fuenlabrada (69-66)

STATS

BALONCESTO FUENLABRADA, 69
REGAL FC BARCELONA, 66

Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (25+15+20+9): Kus (16), Colom (4), Ayón (24), Guardia (-), Rabaseda (1) – STARTING FIVE - Mainoldi (15), Laviña (-), Valters (5) Biyombo (2), Cortaberría (2)

Regal FC Barcelona (18+12+21+15): Rubio (6), Navarro (20), Ndong (6), Morris (9), Grimau (4) – STARTING FIVE - Sada (2), Lakovic (-), Perovic (7), Vázquez (1), Ingles (-), Lorbek (2), Anderson (9)

Navarro (20 points) and Gustavo Ayón (24) offered the fans a great spectacle of basketball, but it was the Mexican who crowned his performance with a win after the hosts had led for most of the match. Baloncesto Fuenlabrada had warned before the game that they were aiming to close the game down as much as possible and keep their options open to the end and although Barça fought back from a 12 point deficit to finish just two points behind, it was Fuenlabrada who held their nerve to record the win - just the second in 25 years against Barça for the Madrid team.

Ayón causes havoc

Salva Maldonado’s team started strong and with the Mexican Gustavo Ayón, dictating the game, Xavi Pascul was forced to call an early time out to try and stop him. Unfortunately, the attempts to stop the Mexican down the middle just opened up space for Mainoldi, Valters and Kus on the outside.

Fuenlabrada built up an eleven point lead before the break and it could have been more if the referees had not disallowed a Biyombo smash from a Quim Colon assist that they ruled out of time.

Navarro takes hold

Juan Carlos Navarro was back in the team after missing Thursday’s game with a dental problem and he now took control of the game as Regal tried to get back into contention, with a three pointer to make it 44-38 before Morris repeated the trick to bring Regal back to 48-46. Fuenlabrada didn’t crumble under the pressure though and Mainoldi and Kus hit back and the hosts closed out the third quarter 9 points ahead at 60-51.

Mainoldi, Morris and Navarro kept the scoreboard ticking over at the start of the final quarter with three pointers and as the visitors cut down the lead as Fuenlabrada brought Ayón back on. Ndong made it 68-66 with seven seconds to go, but the hosts held onto the ball, scored a single point and held off Barça’s final attack to take the points.
