Juan Carlos Navarro is approaching another landmark in a record-breaking career. With Marcus Fizer now out of contention, ‘La Bomba’ is well on the way to becoming the top scorer in the regular phase of ACB.
Navarro has just three games left to finish as top scorer in the ACB league, something that no
other Barça player has ever achieved. The Winterthur Barça guard just needs to maintain his current
average as right now, with Marcus Fizer still unable to play, he tops the ranking.
Marcus Fizer, who plays for Polaris World Murcia, leads the points table with Juan Carlos
Navarro in second place. However, the injury picked up by the USA star on 13th April will now keep
him out of the race to finish as top scorer.
The two thirds rule
The ACB rules state that a player must take part in at least two thirds of
the competition in order to have a place in the tables of statistics. Murcia only have two games
left to play – counting that Fizer will miss the duel against Unicaja - and so he has only
played in 20 games, leaving him short of the two third target.
Fizer has had an irregular season. He was axed from Polaris World Murcia on 13th October only
to be reinstated just two weeks later. In March he dropped out of the competition again and
reappeared for the first half of April before his injury stopped him in his tracks.
This situation leaves Juan Carlos Navarro in a great position. He has an average of 17.4
points. In second place comes Luis Scola, of TAU Cerámica, with 16.7 while in third place comes
Rudy Fernández (DKV Joventut) with 16.1.
A landmark
Should Juan Carlos finish the regular phase as top scorer, he will achieve
yet another success in his professional career. Navarro, a central part of the Club’s
basketball section, would become the first Spanish player to top the averages since Alfredo Pérez
in 1973.
