Lagun Aro produce surprise win over Barça (82-69)

Winterthur Barça have lost to Lagun Aro in round 31 of the ACB league. The reaction of the Lagun Aro players after the break was the key.

Lagun Aro never allowed Winterthur Barça to settle down and play their game and the opening lead of 4-0 was a warning of things to come. However, Barça hit back and finished the first period with a nine-point lead (12-21) with Rodrigo de la Fuente very much the main danger in attack.

Lagun Aro turn on the three-pointers

In the second period, the Basque team gradually reduced the gap. The three-pointers from Lucas Recker –with an average of 71% - did the early damage. The 12,000 fans in the Bizkaia Arena (La Casilla) were right behind their team and pushed them to within one point at the break (34-35).

The game continued to slip away from Barça after the break and the visitors took a full four minutes to score their first points, with Jordi Trias taking the score to 45-37 after an assist from Roko Ukic. However, for the home side Frederic Weis completely cancelled out Denis Marconato and though Vázquez and Trias did their best to challenge the French star, they were unable to pin him down. Navarro, with 10 points, was unable to influence the game while Lakovic was not having a good day points wise. All in all, Lagun Aro kept Barça at arm’s length and after 30 minutes the scoreboard stood at 59-49.

Little time to react

Nothing very much changed for Barça in the final period, though in the last three minutes Barça top scorer Basile gave the Basque fans a fright with two consecutive three-pointers (73-65). With the seconds ticking away, Lakovic received his fifth personal and Lagun Aro rounded off the score 82-69.
