Barca took their fourth title of the year, the Spanish Super Cup, against Athletic Bilbao in a two-legged final that Guardiola’s men won 1-2 in Bilbao and 3-0 in the Nou Camp.
FC Barcelona and Real Madrid with 8 wins each are the leading Super Cup winners in Spain and
Barca’s most recent title was won against Bilbao on August 23rd.
Cup Final replay
The League and Cup winners meet in the Spanish Super Cup over two legs and with Barca winning
both titles in the 2008/09 season, the Cup runners up won the right to face the team that had
beaten them a few months earlier in Mestalla.
First leg at San Mamés
The first leg was held on August 16th and was Barca’s official opener for the new
season. There was plenty of expectation to see if the triple winning team of 08/09 could carry on
their great football into the new season and although De Marcos put the hosts ahead early on, Xavi
and Pedro turned the result round and Barca went back to Catalonia with a healthy looking lead.
Pedro kicks off goal scoring record
Pedro’s goal wasn’t just important in winning the game in Bilbao, it was also to
set him up for a remarkable scoring record which he rounded off in Abu Dhabi to score in all six
competitions Barca have played in the 09-10 season.
Title number 4 at the Camp Nou
Nobody in the team was taking the second leg lightly and two goals from Messi, one a penalty,
and a third from Bojan sealed a professional display at the Nou Camp and brought the 8th Spanish
Super Cup to the club, the fourth title of the six they were to finally take in 2009.
Leading Cup winners
With the 2009 title, Barca drew level with Real Madrid with 8 Super Cup titles since the
competition was inaugurated in 1982. Four of Barca’s titles came during the 90s when they
dominated the Spanish scene.
