Following on from the success at Wembley in 1992, FC Barcelona now has its second European Cup. The Museum will have to make room again for the trophy after 14 years and the year 2006 will enter into the history of the club in letters of gold.
As of this Wednesday, FC Barcelona has a new trophy to exhibit in the Museum – the Champions
League won in Paris against Arsenal. And winning the trophy for the second time throws up a number
of fascinating facts.
A Golden Anniversary
The Club has won the Champions League in the year of the 50th anniversary of European
competitions. During this half century, Barca has played five CL finals – previously known as
the European Cup – winning twice: against Sampdoria in Wembley and against Arsenal in Paris.
Three trophies for Barca
This season, FC Barcelona has won three of the four competitions in which it was involved.
The first title came in August when the Club won the Spanish Super Cup against Betis; a few weeks
ago the team notched up a second consecutive league title away to Celta de Vigo.
And this Wednesday, FC Barcelona was crowned as the best team in Europe after winning the
Champions League in Paris. The only trophy that has slipped through the players' fingers was the
Spanish Cup. And Barca still has to play the final of the Copa Catalunya against Espanyol.
Rijkaard among the greats
Frank Rijkaard has become the fifth person to win the European Cup as a player and as a
coach. He joins an exclusive group made up of Miguel Muñoz, Giovanni Trapattoni, Johan Cruyff and
Carlo Ancelotti. In his playing days, Rijkaard won the European Cup three times with Ajax and AC
Milan (2). And now, as a coach, he's won it with Barca.
A Barca double
FC Barcelona has now done the double of league and Champions League, making the Club presided
by Joan Laporta one of only four teams – the others are Ajax, Liverpool and Bayern Munich -
to have achieved the double more than once. In 50 years of European competition, only 13 teams have
done the double of league and Champions League at least once.
Seven clubs with two titles
Barca is now the seventh club to have won the trophy on two occasions. The others are Benfica
(1960-61 and 61-62), Juventus (1984-85 and 1995-96), Manchester United (1967-68 and 98-99), Inter
(1963-64 and 1964-65), Porto (1986-87 and 2003-04) and Nottingham Forest (1978-79 and 79-80).
