Rijkaard: "We want to win for Eto'o"

The serious injury sustained by Samuel Eto'o was the main topic of conversation in the press conference in the build up to the game on Saturday against Bilbao. "We'll miss him", said Rijkaard.

Barça have lost their top goal scorer for the next five months, leaving Barça with the objective of getting him back in the best possible condition. However, Rijkaard is confident of his team's continued success in both La Liga and the Champions League. "We are all behind him, but I hope we can continue to work hard so that when he returns, he returns to a team in the same position we are now. We want to win for the club, for Barça and for Eto'o", he added.

Confidence in the team

It is clear that Samuel Eto'o's contribution has been key to the success of the team over the last few years. However, Rijkaard is convinced that he has sufficient cover so that Samuel's absence will not be noticed.

"It's a shame for Eto'o, because he's a fantastic player and we'll miss him, but I have every confidence in the team", said Rijkaard, giving his assurances that "we haven't spoken of any new future signings". Rijkaard wanted to make it clear that "it can't be said that injuries have come back to haunt Barça, because we only have one player with a serious injury - this happens to all teams".

Saviola's new role

Saviola got his first run out in the last game against Valencia. Frank Rijkaard said as he has done before, that the Argentinean had decided to stay, therefore there is one more in the team. With the injury to Eto'o, Saviola will play a greater role. "It's logical now that Saviola is one of our strikers", commented the Dutch coach, "We need all our players to be prepared - Saviola has shown great desire and attitude, so if the time comes for him, it will not be by chance".

Ronaldinho to support strikers

Gudjohnsen and Saviola are the natural replacements of Samuel Eto'o, although the coach does have other options. Ronaldinho has filled this role if and when needed in the past, but Rijkaard prefers him to play a different role "sometimes he's played there and he could be an option, but I don't see him as a striker, I see him as having more of a supporting role and a freedom to move around the pitch".

San Mamés

Barça will travel to Bilbao this Friday in preparation for their game against Athletic. Athletic have so far been unable to win in the league; however Rijkaard has warned of the dangers of complacency. "We know their situation" said Rijkaard, "they have a good squad and it's not an easy place to go to" he added.

Rijkaard:
Eto'o always at hand
As of this Saturday, Eto'o will have to be content with watching the games on TV or from the terraces. He can't play, but he can continue giving his support to the team at all times. For the time being, he has already given his support to the team - Rijkaard revealed: "Eto'o offered his support after the training session - this clearly shows he's thinking of the team. It's a fantastic gesture".
