XICS Senegal (Richard Toll)

  • Location
Richard Toll is a city with 120,000 inhabitants located in the province of Saint-Louis, in the Senegal Sahel, ten minuets from the border with Mauritania.
Its source of income comes from the sugar industry, which provides approximately 5,000 jobs in the area. The region, which is separated from Mauritania only by a river, is a home to families that flew from the internal conflict in Mauritania to seek refuge in Senegal. Many of these families have members with public health problems such as malaria, malnutrition, diarrhea illnesses and HIV/AIDS.
  • Beneficiaries
  • Infrastructures and activities
Among the activities developed are five vocational workshops on sewing, hairdressing, horticulture, mechanics, electronics and construction works. The centre has carried out literacy lessons in French and Arabic for youths participating in these workshops and school reinforcement session to prepare children at school for their exams. Every three months the centre organised sports tournaments involving other clubs from the region.
