XICS Mali (Bamako)

  • Location
The centre is built in the neighbourhood of Téléphone Sans Fil (TSF), an area which was created by the fur factory workers, the workers from the telecommunication companies, from the slaughterhouse and the fisherman from the Niger river. The rural exodus in search of work caused for this neighbourhood to grow spontaneously, lacking social and educational infrastructures, a circumstance that limits or makes impossible the access to basic services.
  • Beneficiaries
The centres currently hold 173 children between 6 and 16 years. The great majority of families from the neigbourhood have very low incomes which does not allow them to send their chidren to school. Moreover, also living in this neighbourhood are Bozo families –a local ethnic group-, in very precarious conditions and their children are sent to the ‘daaras’ or work to help their families.
  • Infrastructures and activities
The XICS Mali was officially innaugurated the 24th of March 200.

The beneficiaries were distributed in three types of activities: school reinforcement lessons for the youngest –who attend the adjoining primary school-, special classes to return to school in the cases of abandonment, and vocational training for the oldest which inlcude teaching of basic literacy and reinforcement in subjects such as vocabulary, arithmetic and civic education.
The vocational training students were able to choose among different workshops: sewing, dyeing, mechanics and electronics, held in the nigbourhood craftmen's shops.
The medical monitoring is carried out in cooperation with the Health Centre managed by Mutuelle Benkan.
