XICS India (Bathalapalli and Atmakur)

  • Location
Both centres are located in the district of Anantapur, to the South of India. Anantapur is the largest district of the 22 that form the state of Andhra Pradesh.
  • Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries –one hundred per centre– are boys and girls between 9 and 14 years from the poorest and most excluded communities of the Hindu caste system who live in the area of Bathalapalli and Atmakur. Many of them are dalits, children who do not have access to public education and who have been historically condemned to carry out very badly paid jobs. The projects promote social cohesion and enable boys and girls from the different castes, social conditions and physical condition to feel integrated within the society.
  • Activities and results
The XICS of Bathalapalli was officially inaugurated the 12th of February 2009 in the presence of President Joan Laporta

This centre has promoted children's education through the after-school reinforcement lessons —especially in subjects such as maths, science and English— and computer lessons. They were reinforced with a diet of healthy food and carried out workshops on education, hygiene and health.

The following sport activities were practiced: football, hockey and local sports such as ‘kho-kho’ and ‘kabbadi’. The integration and co-existence between the boys and girls from the different conditions and castes was fomented also by organising after-school outings and meetings with the families.

The first stone of the XICS Atmakur was placed on the 13th of February 2009 in the presence of Joan Laporta. The centre will be in operation in 2010.
