Cup of cheer

FC Barcelona are on course to win four Copa del Rey’s this season as the football team is in the semi finals, while the basketball and the handball have already won the tournament and the roller hockey side picked up the trophy at the weekend.


Not since the 1993-94 campaign have the basketball, handball and roller hockey teams all won the competition in the same season, while the club has never had four sides win the event all in one year. Frank Rijkaard’s squad could complete the quartet if they can win the football Copa del Rey hjaving reached the ssemi final stage after beating Real Zaragoza.

Basketball victory

The first winners of the cup this season were Winterthur FC Barcelona. Dusko Ivanovic’s team were in superb form as they swept to victory in Malaga and defeated Real Madrid, 53-69, in the final. The basketball outfit secured the trophy for the first time in four seasons and could be the first of a glorious triple, as they are rejuvenated in the ACB League and are in the quarter finals of the Euroleague.
Rolling along

Barca Sorli Discau proudly paraded the handball trophy in the Palau on Saturday after a triumphant display a week earlier in Alcoy. Quim Pauls team won the Copa del Rey for the 17th time with a 1-3 victory over Reus after a tough tournament that saw them beat some strong teams like Roncato Pati Vic and Liceo Vodafone.

Handball glory

Xesco Espar’s handball team, who were recently knocked out of the Champions League, won the cup to ensure themselves of some silverware this season. The trophy was acquired after a win over eternal rivals, BM Ciudad Real in the first round. In the semi finals CAI Aragon were eliminated and Ademar Leon were defeated in the final itself, 33-27.

Athletic performance

The athletics section of the club continued this excellent run as they won the Copa del Rey in January. The men’s team tasted victory in Valencia as they took, and beat, Playas de Castellón and Chapín Jerez. The women’s team came close as they finished third.
