Spectacular final (107-118)

Carles Cascante

Navarro and his team mates put on a valiant showing against the United States in the Olympic final. At half-time the score was an incredible 61-69. ‘La Bomba’ started the game and played his part by contributing 17 points in a pulsating game.

After the first half, everybody expected the North Americans to steamroll the Spanish side, but that’s not what happened. With 8 minutes and 15 seconds to go, Rudy Fernandez put the Spaniards to within two points (89-91) but the quality of the United States, coupled with quite a few controversial refereeing decisions, ended the dream of Aito Garcia Reneses and his players once and for all.

Pau Gasol finished the tournament as highest scorer with 157 points, ahead of Scola of Argentina and Wade of the US. The ex-blaugrana played a great final game and scored 21 points.
