Four break into the first team
A good measure of the quality of the youth sides is the number of players making it through to the first team. This season four players were included in the squad for Honour Division matches: Alex Verdejo, Jordi Campoy, Roger Serrano and Eric Martel, the latter making his first team debut against Gestesa Guadalajara in the Palau (5-0). Meanwhile, Juanito consolidated his place in the first team.

The promotion of Senior B to the second division will help these youngsters from the reserves make the leap to the top flight.

Youth teams sweep the board

The youth teams of FC Barcelona collected a bagful of trophies this season. They all won their respective league titles while the juniors (alevin) took the Spanish Championship and Senior B won promotion to the second division.

It was quite possibly the best season ever for Barca’s youth teams. Here’s a rundown team by team.

Senior B: League champions and promotion

The team coached by Albert Canillas finished top of the Catalan-Balearic group of National A, above Hospitalet, Corbera and Vilassar, three of the toughest opponents during the season. First place allowed them to play Hotel Ciudad de Burgos for promotion, winning both games at home (5-4), and away (2-3). The reward – promotion to the second flight of Spanish futsal.

Treble for the youth team (juvenil)

In the league, the team coached by Miguel Angel Palomares took the title by a large margin, with second placed Marfil Santa Coloma finishing a full 20 points behind, and lost only one game in the season. In the Spanish Club Championship, they lost out in the semi-finals against Boadilla Las Rozas. They had better luck in the Copa Catalunya (4-0 against Mataró in the final) and also won the Taza de Lisboa international tournament in Portugal.

Cadets fly high

They also picked up the winners’ trophy in the Lugo international tournament in January. However, in the Copa Catalunya they were eliminated in the semi-finals away to Marfil Santa Coloma.

Three out of Four for the Boys

In a hotly contested league, they fought a close battle with Les Corts and clinched the title in the last few games. They also lifted the Copa Catalunya (3-2 in the final against Marfil Santa Coloma) and the Lugo international tournament. However, in the Spanish championship they lost to Plásticos Romero after beating Gimnástico Melilla 12-3 in the semi-finals.

Juniors (Alevín): another treble

2010-03-13_FUTBOL_SALA_ALEVIN_11.JPGThey won the league title after a season-long duel with Les Corts, both teams losing only once throughout the year. However, Barca did not concede any draws which gave them the title. The side coached by Carlos Martínez also won the Copa Catalunya against Marfil Santa Coloma (7-1) and the Spanish Club Championship, beating Ciudad de Toledo in the semi finales and CD Grucer, champion of Madrid, in the grand final. They did not compete in any international tournaments.
