Details of the agreement

The main purpose of the agreement is to raise awareness in society about the extreme vulnerability of millions of refugees throughout the world and to stress the important role which sport has as a means of education and social inclusion.

Thanks to this partnership, signed on 22 January 2008, sport is to be used as a means of education and social integration for thousands of children and young people who are in refugee and displaced persons camps or who have voluntarily returned to their countries or regions of origin.

In addition one of the priorities of the programmes to be rolled out is the integration of refugees and displaced persons in their host communities.

Length and funding

The agreement is to last three years, from 2008 to 2010, and it can be extended at the end of this period. Under the agreement FC Barcelona does not undertake to use the UNHCR logo on its shirts nor does it provide for any funding. FC Barcelona and UNHCR will be responsible for getting the resources required to implement programme actions on the ground.

Setting up a Steering Committee

A Steering Committee is to be set up to take decisions and monitor actions formed by UNHCR and FC Barcelona and the FC Barcelona Foundation. The Catalan UNHCR Committee will also be on this Committee.

The Committee will meet at least once every six months and will be in charge of supervising projects, deciding on priorities, setting schedules and making a final assessment of each activity.
