Spectacular win in the Palau (42-25)

Verònica Díez

Barça Borges thrashed Cuenca 2016 in game six of the Asobal handball season at the Palau (42-25).This was the biggest winning margin for any club this season.

FC Barcelona led 21-9 in the first half, which already suggested a handsome win, and Cuenca were so disheartened by the rout that they failed to conjure up a second half response.

Juanín García scored seven, but it was the play by the wide players and the teamwork in general that really produced this morale-boosting victory ahead of a crunch European fixture against THW Kiel this weekend.

Ten glorious minutes

2009-10-07_BALONMANO_18.JPGFC Barcelona led 7-0 after just ten minutes, and it was immediately clear that they were far superior to their visitors. Saric was impeccable in goal, the attacks came thick and fast, and Juanín García was converting the goals with ease.

Cuenca made mistakes all over the court: lost balls and defensive errors were lapped up by Barça who led 21-9 at the break.

Finishing off

2009-10-07_BALONMANO_04.JPGCuenca sought to make up for a dismal first half with a more intense game in the second half, but David Barrufet was stopping everything. Instead, Barça simply stretched their lead to 17. Barça Borges scored 13 goals in the second half, with Rutenka now taking command of the attack.

The downside of the game was a 22nd minute thigh injury suffered by Rubén Garabaya. On Thursday the player will be examined and it will be determined whether this means he will be out of action for the game against the Germans at the weekend.
