King of the Super Cup

FC Barcelona’s victory against Sevilla on Saturday evening means that they have now won the Spanish Super Cup on more occasions than any other team.

Pep Guardiola’s team lifted the pre-season trophy for the ninth time in the club’s history after overturning a first leg reverse to ease to an aggregate victory thanks to a hat-trick from Lionel Messi.

Consecutive wins

The win means that the Blaugrana retained the Super Cup as they won the pot 12 months ago with a 5-1 aggregate win over Athletic Club. It is only the third time that Barça have retained the trophy as they previously won it back-to-back in 1991/92 and 2004/05 when Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard were in charge, respectively.

Out in front

With this latest triumph FC Barcelona are now out in front at the top of the Super Cups won chart as they edged ahead of Real Madrid. In 2005 Los Merengues were the clear leaders as they have won the trophy on seven occasions and Barça just five, but since then the situation has been turned on its head

Barça’s triumphs in the Spanish Super Cup have come in 1983, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010.
