Arsène Wenger’s side has squandered a golden opportunity to gain some ground on Manchester United at the top of the Premiership, with the Red Devils facing a tough challenge on Sunday against Liverpool at Anfield. They also have a game in hand on the leaders, but today’s result has done their title challenge few favours.

Arsenal failed to dominate the first half and were clearly missing playmaker Cesc Fàbregas. The best chance came in the 39th minute, but Betner’s effort was saved.

The Londoners produced considerably better football after the break, and Nasri almost scored from a 71st minute free kick. From there on it was a constant assault on Simon Mignolet’s goal but the keeper and the crossbar got in the way every time. Sunderland twice came close to a shock away win in the final minutes, but it ultimately ended goalless.
