Sanz and Guardiola, from tracksuit to tie

Fernando Sanz, the president of Malaga, will be presiding over this weekend’s game at La Rosaleda. On the bench, Pep Guardiola seeking to win his fifth league game. They both last met on the pitch nine years ago.


The Malaga president and the Barça coach met in clashes between Andalusians and Catalans back in the 1999/00 season.

Two away wins

PARTIDO_WEB_18.JPGIt ended honours even. Malaga, at the Camp Nou got a surprise 2-1 win against the side then coached by Louis van Gaal. Pep Guardiola and Fernando Sanz were only on the field together for four minutes. Sanz came on after 63 minutes to replace Movilla. Guardiola, who had started the match, was taken off in the 67th minute to make way for Zenden.

Half a season later, Barça won at the La Rosaleda against the team managed by Joaquín Peiró (1-2). Catanha opened the scoring for the home side, but Abelardo and Patrick Kluivert turned the game around. Fernando Sanz played the whole game while Guardiola, like in Barcelona, was once again substituted in the 67th minute, this time replaced by a very young Xavi Hernández.

Fourth year as president
Fernando Sanz, son of former president of Real Madrid Lorenzo Sanz, is in his fourth year as president of the side from the Costa del Sol. He took over as president of the top flight outfit at the startlingly young age of 32.
