Barça dominate UEFA nominations

Five Barça players, plus Eto’o, who has moved to Inter, are among the candidate this Thursday for the UEFA awards for last season’s Champions League. Barça has more nominees than any other club.


FC Barcelona, winners of the 2008/09 Champions League, is the club with most nominees for Thursday UEFA awards in Monaco. There are awards for the best player in each position as well as for the best player overall. The ceremony will take place during the draw for this season’s group stage at the Forum Grimaldi,

Six Barça nominees

ZUERAS_FC.BARCELONA_-_MANCHESTER_UNITED_FINAL_CHAMPIONS_27-05-09_058.JPGThe nominations were announced a few days ago and included six players from the side that lifted the trophy in Rome: Valdés (goalkeeper), Piqué (defender), Iniesta and Xavi, (midfield) and Messi and Eto’o - now with Inter – (forwards).

They will also compete for the best overall player award.

The most nominations

FC Barcelona has the most nominations ahead of the other three semi-finalists from last season’s competition: Manchester United with 3, Chelsea – eliminated by Barça – with 2 and Liverpool with 1.

Coaches with the vote

This year, for the first time, the awards will be decided by the coaches of the 16 teams that qualified for the first knockout round of the Champions League.

The 2006 awards
After winning the Champions League in Paris in 2006, Barça dominated the UEFA awards with Puyol as best defender, Deco as best midfielder and Ronaldinho as most valuable player. The only nominee to miss out was Víctor Valdés, who failed to take the prize as best goalkeeper.
