Alves, the only Barça player to have won the European Super Cup

Sandra Sarmiento

Dani Alves is the only player in the current Barça squad that has won the European Super Cup. He won it with Sevilla in 2006 …. against Barça!

The Barça squad has built up an impressive array of silverware over the past few seasons but only one player can boast of having won the European Super Cup, unless we include team manager Pep Guardiola, who won it twice during his playing days, in 1992/93 and 1997/98. Dani Alves won his medal on 25th August 2006 with Sevilla – it was the Andalus club’s second title of the season after beating Middlesbrough in the UEFA Cup Final. The Brazilian defender was one of the stars of Sevilla’s 3-0 victory in a sad night for Barça fans.

“Man of the match”

Sevilla exploded onto the pitch of the Stade Louis II and from the very first minute showed their determination to beat the winners of the Champions League.

Sevilla number 4, Dani Alves, was voted man of the match and completely cancelled out Ronaldinho. He also found time to join the attack and demonstrated with his speed, accuracy and danger why he was one of the best right backs in the league.

A marvellous memory

However, for Frank Rijkaard’s team it was a night to forget. But as Alves assures us with a smile: “Now it’s time to give you back the title I took away from you”.

Three finals in four years
Friday’s match will be the third Super Cup final that Dani Alves has played in 4 years. In 2007, he lost 3-1 against Milan with the Sevilla team mourning the death of Antonio Puerta just three days earlier. Too soon to recover from such a huge loss.
