Six Barça stars up for UEFA awards

Six players from FC Barcelona's treble-winning squad have been nominated for the best players awards in last season's Champions League tournament.


Víctor Valdés, Gerard Piqué, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto'o have all been named in the list of candidates in the positions of goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards after the tremendous season by the club that concluded with victory over Manchester United in Rome.

WEB_07.jpgValdés is named as one of the goalkeepers alongside Manchester United's Edwin van der Sar and Chelsea's Peter Cech. Piqué is the only Barça defender nominated alongside Chelsea's John Terry and Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic.

Double decker

WEB_12.jpgThe awards for best midfielder and best forward see Barcelona's chances of success increase two-fold as they club have two players nominated for each position. Xavi and Iniesta are up for the midfield prize along with Steven Gerrard of Liverpool. Up front, Messi is put forward along with Inter's Eto'o and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, both of whom moved clubs in the summer

Decision time

The winners will be announced on August 27 at the Forum Grimaldo in Monaco during the ceremony for the group phase draw for the 2009-10 campaign.

Voting duties
The people voting for the best players will be the 16 coaches that classified for the last 16 of the Champions League last term.
