Amazing Messi scores goal 5,100

Jordi Clos

Leo Messi’s equaliser in Almeria was also goal number 5,100 for Barça in the League. The Balon d’Or winner has thus consolidated his place as top goalscorer.

Fortune was not smiling on Barça at the Juegos del Mediterraneo. They went a goal down early on, squandered several chances, and also suffered an own goal and a harsh sending off. But in the face of such adversity, Leo Messi, the best player in the world, still managed to produce two goals to at least gain a point as a reward for Barcelona’s dominant display.

Goal 5,100

2010-03-04_VESTUARIO_32.JPGHis first, in the 42nd minute, was the result of an exquisite free kick, and which was also the 5,100th for Barça in the Spanish championship. Curiously, it was also Messi who scored goal 5,000. That was last season on February 2, in a 2-1 win away to Racing Santander.

Decisive month

2010-03-04_VESTUARIO_20.JPGIn the second half, and with his side playing with one man less, an opportunistic action made it 2-2, and he very nearly scored the winner with five minutes to go, but Diego Alves pulled off a miraculous save. Messi had an extraordinary game – eleven of Barça’s 23 shots were the Argentinian’s work. He also dribbled though the Almeria defence 11 times and supplied five assists to team mates.
