Winter Champions with authority

www.fcbarcelona.cat

FC Barcelona are mathematically the Winter Champions as the league reaches its halfway point. The win against Seville and Madrid’s defeat in Bilbao mean Guardiola’s team have a 5 point lead at the top with one game to play before the halfway mark.

Barca now have 46 points, 5 more than second place Madrid and remain unbeaten, having won 14 of their 18 games so far this season.

2009-10-25_FCB_-_REAL_ZARAGOZA_004.JPGBarca have won one more game than Madrid, having beaten their rivals 1-0 at the Nou Camp, but the main difference between the two teams is that Madrid have lost three times in all – in Barcelona, Bilbao and Seville, whilst Guardiola’s team remain unbeaten.

Eight goals better off than R. Madrid

The goal difference between the two leading teams is also in Barca’s favour: Madrid have scored 42 goals and conceded 14 (+28) against Barca’s 46 goals for and 10 against (+36).

If they avoid defeat against Valladolid next week, this will be the first season Barca have gone unbeaten for the whole of the first half of a league programme.

With three games to spare last year
Pep Guardiola’s team were also Winter Champions last season, something they achieved with three games to spare when after beating Villarreal, second placed Seville could only draw against Mallorca.
