Puyol: “We are on the right track”

Jesús Carrillo

FC Barcelona captain Carles Puyol claimed on Tuesday evening that the side is doing fine, but that it would be better if the players took as little notice as possible of the praise that is coming their way.

As part of a presentation of the CP5 watch held at Hotel NH Constanza in Barcelona, where the squad usually gathers before home matches, Carles Puyol reviewed the current condition of the first team. “We are on the right track and we have to keep on doing what we have done until now. This is a good moment for us and we have to take advantage of it. We know there will be harder times ahead, but if we can maintain this unity, then we have a potential title winning team”.

The danger of Valencia

The first game in the hardest part of the season has been overcome successfully, but Carles Puyol knows that there are plenty of very good sides hot on their heels. And there is no finer case in point than their next opponents. “Valencia have a very strong squad and Saturday’s game will be very difficult. They are a team packed with top quality players and we have to get everything right if we want to win”.

Puyol also reiterated the importance of counting on the vocal support of their fans at the Camp Nou on Saturday, saying “we have a lot to play for and the more people come to the stadium, the stronger we will be”.

No time for praise

The Barça captain thinks it is far to early to start evaluating Pep Guardiola’s first season in charge. “There is no time to think about everything we have been achieving, and if we do that is the kind of thing that might weaken us. When we really have things to celebrate, we will do so, but not before. And there is a long way to go before we can celebrate titles”.

The Ballon d’Or
Carles Puyol wished to publicly congratulate Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo on being named the best player in Europe. He also had words for his colleague Lionel Messi, saying “I think Leo Messi is the best player in the world, and I can say that because I see him on a daily basis and I have never seen anything quite like him. Sooner or later, Messi will win the Ballon d’Or”.
