Champions in all three European competitions

Edgar Fornós

Barcelona and Bayern Munich are the only two sides left in European competition to have won the Champions League, the UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup.

The Champions League quarter final draw paired Barça and Bayern Munich, the only two teams left in the competition to have won Europe’s three premier pieces of silverware: the Champions League, the UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup.

First the Cup Winners’ Cup

BASILEA-_TRIOMF.jpgThe first European title for both Barça and Bayern Munich was the old Cup Winners’ Cup. The Germans won it in 1967 after beating Glasgow Rangers, while Barça saw off Fortuna Düsseldorf in Basel in 1979. Barcelona would win three more, the last in Rotterdam when a Ronaldo penalty defeated PSG in 1997.

Europe’s top prize

Both sides have also won the European Cup. The 1970s were the golden age for Bayern Munich, winning the Cup three years on the bounce in 1974, 1975 and 1976 when they were captained by Franz Beckenbauer. Their fourth triumph came in 2001 at the San Siro after beating Valencia in a penalty shoot-out. Barcelona first won the trophy in 1992 at Wembley against Sampdoria and 14 years later were champions once more against Arsenal in Paris.

Black and white and colour

The last time Barça won it was in black and white in 1966. The Germans carried off the silverware in colour in 1996 for the only time in their history with their attack led by current club coach Jurgen Klinsman.
