Henry: “If we don’t win the league, records count for nothing”

Roger Bogunyà

On the day that Barça broke the record for the most points at the half way stage of the league, one of the goalscorers, Thierry Henry, pointed out that “If we don’t win the league, records count for nothing”.

The players were naturally delighted with the win against Deportivo (5-0), but also realise that there are still another 57 points to play for. “We haven’t won anything yet, but we are on the right track”, said the Frenchman, who scored a brace on Saturday night, making a total of 11 in the league this season.

As for the team’s attitude tonight, Henry made it clear that “we always go out to win, but you can always lose.”

The following are some of the comments made by the Barça players tonight:

Messi

“Records are good but we have to keep on winning and collecting points.”
“I am happy because things are going well. We have points and results.”

Eto'o

“Nothing is easy in life. We have to keep our feet on the ground, we have to carry on like that.”
“What I want to do is win the next game. If my goals help, so much the better.”
“I didn’t celebrate it (his second goal from the sot) because it was a friend of mine in goal (Juan Rodríguez, who took the placed of the red carded Aranzubia)”.

Puyol

“The key is that we went for it from the first minute and we all worked hard.”
On the penalty incident: “Things like that don’t go though my mind, because I am a defender.”
“It is always nice to score, but it is also important for Eto'o.”
“The record won’t win us the title. We have to carry on working.”
“These things count. It is clear that the team is the most important things, but I am also happy when there is somebody in the side competing for an individual award.”
“I think it’s good to defend in zones. When you mark man to man, they score as well. We have every faith in the way we defend.”
“After losing to Numancia I never imagined we’d have a first half like this.”
“We are really looking forward to the cup game.”

Xavi

“Barça looked far superior to Deportivo.”
“Records are great for us. I think everything is great for us at the moment.”
“The manager is a winner and he knows this club well. And we are professionals as well.”
“I am happy here. The season started hard for me, but I hope to stay here for a very long time.”

“They are statistics. There is a lot to remember, but we just have to carry on winning.”
“The Wednesday game is especially motivating.”
